Event Description
While driving my Chief's Car, I observed a neighboring Volunteer Fire Department returning from a brush fire with 1 member riding alone on the back step of the apparatus. It is against protocol for anyone to be riding on the back step, let alone being the only one there.
Lesson Learned
When I approached this member later on, I explained the safety dangers and strongly suggested he refrain from such future actions and to look up on this web-site how many firefighters have been killed or injured responding to and returning from alarms. The firefighter was approached in a non-threatening manner and regretted his actions.
