Event Description
Engine Company dispatched with a Medic Unit and EMS Supervisor for a long fall with electrocution. Patient found lying on the ground under a still raised ladder. House electrical service also on the ground and still connected to the pole. Engine Lieutenant and a civilian contractor attempted to move the ladder. Ladder came in contact with the downed electric wire. Both Lieutenant and contractor were electrocuted and went into cardiac arrest. The paramedic on the scene shocked both patients, converting each of them to a normal heart rhythm. All three patients transported to the Regional Burn Center where they were treated and released after several days. Fire Lieutenant is still off-duty due to his burn injuries.
Lesson Learned
1. Identify the hazard and evaluate risk vs. gain.
2. When indicated, await assistance of Utility Company.
