Event Description

On May 4, around 1:00am we were dispatched to a house fire. While en route the ambulance notified us by radio of a column of smoke. The ladder truck asked for a tactical channel at this time. After changing to Channel (number deleted), I heard the ladder give the report. On arrival I saw 3 sides of the house and only had fire coming from the back side. I instructed (riding position name deleted) to pull the 200' cross lay to the front door. We entered the house thru the front door, which was already open, and used a semi-fog pattern to attack the fire. We started with the first room, knocking it down. Then we proceeded to the second room and everything was working great. When we reached the third room I noticed heavier fire than the first two rooms, but did not feel any difference in the heat. As the fire started to roll across the ceiling (riding position name deleted) applied water to the ceiling. As the fire turned more intense, I noticed a change in my vision. I wiped my mask with my glove and felt soft bubbles on it. At this time I made the decision to pull my crew out. All three facepieces were melted along with helmets, coats, air pacs, and gloves. One of the fire fighters received second degree burns to both hands.

Lesson Learned

We are still in the process.
