Report Date: 05/27/2005
Event Description
After putting a truck back in service, we were straightening up a storage room. The light cover in the storage room suddenly fell off the light, narrowly missing the firefighter in the room at that time. The plastic light cover is for a 2'X6' fluorescent light and weighs several pounds. The light fixture shattered on impact with the floor. There was no sign of the latches being broken, but they were made of plastic and the light fixture is about 10 years old.
Lesson Learned
Different types of latches, stronger and more durable should be designed and manufactured to hold the light covers in place.
