Event Description

While performing morning equipment checks on the extrication power unit, a hydraulic hoseline burst. The firefighter checking the equipment was wearing his turnout gear including a helmet with full face shield in a down position. This saved him from harm as he was sprayed with the hydraulic fluid. The hose that burst was stored on the truck with the short connection pieces coupled togather, causing a bend in the hose. The bent section is where the hose burst. There were no signs that that the hose might burst, no bubbles or lightening in the hose. The hoselines were, however, greater than 5 years old.

Lesson Learned

1. The short connection hoses should not be stored connected together to prevent stressed areas on the hoses. They should have some type of end cap to keep the fittings clean while allowing the hoses to remain straighter. 2. A replacement time length for the hoselines or a testing requirement should be established. We have SCBAs, fire hose and pumps tested, why not hydraulic lines?
