Event Description

I was assisting in hose testing with a very old pumper. They used hydrant gates to put on the end of the hose. This one was brass. I bled it down as requested, and they jacked the pressure up more. As I was walking away, the hydrant gate blew off the hose and struck my wrist, just missing my head as it flew off my hand. The hose snapped and lifted me off the ground causing me to flip up in the air about 10 feet or so. I broke my wrist and was off the floor for two months.

Lesson Learned

Make sure you are in sight range of the pump operator and clear of the hose before they jack up the pressure.
