Event Description
An EMS supervisor responding to a vehicle rollover misunderstood the first responder and was responding to the incorrect side of the freeway. Upon discovering his error the EMS supervisor decided to contraflow on the freeway when the freeway had not been properly shut down. He only traveled approximately 150 yards to the accident scene. The patient involved in the rollover did not sustain life threatening injury and was not critical.
Lesson Learned
The EMS supervisor was admonished by the Fire Chief that witnessed the accident scene. The misdirection of the EMS supervisor was also addressed with the supervisor on scene after the patient was packaged and transported.
The EMS supervisor's actions were in direct conflict with our SOP's. The EMS supervisor was warned never to attempt this again and was sent to a remedial emergency vehicle operations class(EVOC).
