Event Description

I was acting shift commander when our shift got toned out to a vehicle roll over on fire. A car had been hit by a semi and knocked off the road and caught on fire. An engine and an ambulance responded. I established command upon arrival while the Engine crew tended to the vehicle fire and the ambulance crew tended to the two vehicle passengers. As the fire crew quickly put out the fire I got sucked into helping with patient care instead of incident command. I later noticed the car had run over a gas line vent pipe. We monitored for leaking gas and contacted the company whose line it was. The wind was blowing over the gas line directly to the car.

Lesson Learned

I lost my situational awareness. It happened so easily. The fire was out and I thought I was being helpful with the patients. I should have been taking care of what was my responsibility; scene safety. I shared this with as many personnel as I could at my department.
