Report Date: 05/27/2005

Event Description

While at a roll-over motor vehicle accident, no extrication, at the bottom of an entrance ramp to the interstate, the FD duty officer vehicle was almost struck by a tractor trailer entering the highway. Weather conditions were fog and rain creating slick conditions. The tractor trailer driver was able to control the vehicle around curve leading to hi-way entrance and barely missed 2 vehicles parked alongside the left side of the ramp. The ramp is a down sloping 180 degree turn from the elevated roadway onto the Interstate.

Lesson Learned

To prevent a similar event, a warning pattern which includes traffic cones, reflective signs and vehicles with warning lights should be set up at the top of the ramp and at intervals up to the accident sight. Furthermore, apparatus should be placed to protect FF's working the scene. SOG's should be created to support the above.
