Event Description

Several engine companies responded to structure fire at local restaurant, Dunkin' Donuts. I was a Lieutenant at the time and in charge of an interior ground crew at this fire. After the fire was extinquished, the roof crew was removing handlines from the roof at the rear of structure. One member of the roof crew simply walked to edge of roof and dropped the handline and attached nozzle from the top of the 1.5-story building to ground without looking or requesting help in lowering line. I happened to be standing below the edge of the roof when the line was dropped. The nozzle landed on my helmet, damaging helmet, and then glanced off to my shoulder. I was wearing full bunker gear at the time. My head was not injured. However, the top of my shoulder joint immediately began swelling and movement was restricted. I went to the hospital for X-rays. No fracture or chipping of bone was noted. I was released with pain meds and told to take a day off to allow the joint to heal and keep iced for awhile. FF who caused the incident was apologetic and talked to concerning safety of personnel below roof crew and considerations necessary.

Lesson Learned

Training was instructed to increase mention of safety during cleanup operations and during roof operations with consideration given to personnel on the ground.
