Event Description

While driving to the academy for pump testing my officer side door suddenly swung open. We hit a small bump in the street which occurs everyday. My arm did not hit the handle as it was in my lap. Luckily I was belted and I was able to close the door before it hit anything. I told the story to a safety officer at the academy and he relayed it to the apparatus chief who immediately had us place the unit OOS. This is a problem with this type of (apparatus) and is currently under investigation by the department.

Lesson Learned

Have a process which enables immediate intervention from maintenance. The unit was placed OOS and repairs performed. A factory inspection and or recall for the locking mechanism should be issued since this is certainly not an isolated incident.
