Report Number: 05-0000061
Report Date: 05/27/2005

Event Description

Two firefighters fell through the floor into the basement of a 2000 sq ft residential dwelling. The fire started in the basement and firefighters found heavy fire involvement on the main floor on arrival. Fire attack was attempted from the doorway off the carport but intense heat drove them back. Another crew from the front door of the main floor attempted another fire attack without instructions to do so. Once inside the doorway, two firefighters fell through the floor to the basement carrying the hose line with them. Conscious and air packs intact, the firefighters extinguish the flames around them while the RIC team makes entry from the rear basement door to the firefighters. Minor injuries and burns received by the two firefighters.

Lesson Learned

Communications is the key. This fire happened on the city/county line where both city and county departments were dispatched and assigned different TAC channels. Only on arrival did we understand what had happened. The report of a person inside the structure intensified the rapid rescue without proper size up.
